Time to Disband the Philippine Military Academy

IT is time to either disband the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) or to overhaul its curriculum and system.

It is condemnable how active and retired military officers from the PMA, including members of class 1979, have decided to embark on a most obscene campaign--to "punish" Sen. Antonio Trillanes by 'shunning' him, etc., for supposedly "humiliating" senior officer and self-confessed EDSA 2 mutineer and "pabaon" corrupt suicider, Gen. Angelo T. Reyes.

Calderon claims that Trillanes violated the PMA code on treating senior officers.

Calderon: “Our core values in the PMA are integrity and loyalty. We also teach them (cadets) honor and respect. My comment is that definitely, this is very uncavalier-like. As an alumnus, I am grieved that a junior officer would say that to a senior officer and a very honorable man (Reyes)”.

Trillanes.

As according to Ninez Cacho Olivares' editorial: the PMAer generals "appear to be prostituting the meaning of honor, respect, integrity and loyalty, along with what is honorable, dishonorable, loyalty and integrity."

"So it is okay to be corrupt in the military and not blow the whistle merely because it is “uncavalier” to snitch on a corrupt elder? Something is wrong somewhere with the values of honor, respect, integrity and loyalty being inculcated in the PMA being twisted to serve the ends of those who may be linked to corruption in the AFP, along with others who are using these twisted values for probes not to dig deeper."

The PMA traces its existence to the American colonial era, when COMMONWEALTH ACT No. 1* (An Act To Provide For The National Defense Of The Philippines, Penalizing Certain Violations Thereof, Appropriating Funds Therefor, And For Other Purposes)  was passed on December 21, 1936:

"Section 30. There shall be established a military training school to be named the Philippine Military Academy, for the training of selected candidates for permanent commission in the Regular Force. The student body in the Military Academy shall be known as the Cadet Corps of the Army of the Philippines."

Its technically-oriented curriculum was patterned after that of the United States Military Academy at West Point. Socio-humanistic courses were added to the PMA curriculum in the 1960s.

Unfortunately, the socio-humanistic courses added do not seem to have helped humanize nor moralize at least some of the elder graduates of PMA. Antonio Luna noon 1898.

  1. ‎"Yet another retired military officer who was unnamed, blasted at whistle-blower retired Lt. Col. George Rabusa, military budget officer during Reyes’ AFP chief term, should be charged for plunder, and that Rabusa was corrupt while Reyes w...as honorable.

"But if these so-called cavaliers think Rabusa should be charged with plunder and that he is not honorable, why then think that Reyes, who has admitted being part of the web of corruption, be hailed as honorable?"

  2. i just learned that most high.ranking AFP officers are masons. imagine that? mukhang walang nagawang kabutihan sa moralidad ng mga matataas na sundalo ang samahang mason???

  3. overhaul the curriculum and its system, then, hill to save the pma.

pero meron akong military officer friend--non-PMAer--na nagsabing mainam pa nga mawala yang pma kasi halos lahat daw ng anomalya and kasangkot ay mga nagsipagtapos sa pma ng...a.

  4. perhaps, hill, the pma is not that wide and clearly sign-posted, marked and paved. perhaps it's bako.bako and even slippery at some areas, with signs so labo. kailangan siguro pagaayos na umaatikabo.

reform at least. and calls to disband i...t may not nec. lead to its disbandment but to genuine reform. whatever, the senate investigations should continue para we know as much as possible the state of the afp and the pma.

  5. You people who keep on applauding (or glorifying) the misdeeds of Gen.Reyes have a sordid-misplaced sense of values, morality, and patriotism! Shame on you!

Imagine, you defending a corrupt general and finding fault on the person who is supposed to be helping the the country find the truth?

"Cast the first stone?" ano gusto nyo, wala na mamansin ng me maling ginagawa? kanya kanyang kunsinti na lang? no one is trying to be righteous here, but please, think people!

Humiliation? why, was Sen. Trillanes alone with him when that incident took place? In fact, it was more humiliating when Sen. Miriam called Gen. Reyes the "greatest moron" during the senate hearings... Pero me nagreklamo ba? wala...

Remember people, it was not Sen. Trillanes who pulled the trigger, it was Gen. Reyes himself who decided to end his life... a cowardly way of facing (or evading) the truth!
